Are you pumping breast milk? A wholesome nipple balm is important to use both during and after pumping. Moist-seal pumping can make the experience much more comfortable. Apply the balm to the breast and areola before using a breast pump to allow less friction on the sensitive breast tissue. The nipple salve can also be used to lubricate the inner tunnel of the breast pump flange. Although it is really personal preference some find that when the salve is applied directly to the pump, it is more difficult to clean. 

NOTE: Be sure you speak to your doctor or lactation consultant about the proper size pump flange for your breast. The flange is the funnel-shaped piece that fits over the nipple and areola during pumping. It creates a seal which allows for effective suction and expression of milk and affects your physical comfort and milk production while pumping.
